In Search of Shine

This morning we had a lecture/demonstration about fretting... that is making and installing frets, leveling, dressing and crowning them. I'll post details pix of that when I am doing them... the pics of Russ' demonstration were a bit far away to be able to see what's going on in this blog format.
The rest of the day was spent continuing the process of finishing the electric guitars. After yesterday's painting of sunbursts and layering topcoats on, they came out of the booth very shiny, but the lacquer is still not even. It looks a little bit like orange peel... so the task is to continue to sand it with ever finer grit sandpaper. Today we were wet-sanding.
You can see how it looks in the top pic when you start to sand... it dulls the shine where the sandpaper hits, and where there are "valleys" in the finish, they remain shiny. So you sand until there are no "shiners"... first with 800 grit, and then with 1200 grit... making the finish more and more level and the scratches (from the sandpaper) smaller and smaller. Now it's ready to go on the buffing wheel. Travis is doing the first pass on the buffer with the coarser red compound. And you can see the shiny result in the 3rd picture. But wait! there's more! Tomorrow I'll get a chance to try buffing and will use the finer white compound and it'll come up to a super shiny gloss.
Tomorrow, also, we start to learn about wiring the electronics so that the guitar will actually PLAY, and not just look pretty.
