Design

This morning was mostly spent gluing braces to the top of the guitar... and this afternoon we had a long lecture that talked us through the design and drafting process... explained some of the reasons for the placement and shapes of the various braces and grafts on the inside of the guitar. Nearly every piece has both structural and tonal implications that bear on the final result. Calculation of fret spacing, bridge placement, taper of neck... all of that stuff is part of the design process. So far, we have been following the designs and templates provided to us. But part of the course is to ensure that we understand something about what we're doing.
In the 6 mo. master class, students learn more about design and develop their own design. We are just getting the basics. This part involves some amount of math. The only math that ever made sense to me without struggle was geometry. It's coming in handy now.
