Lake Michigan

The Lake is beautiful. It is very strange to approach water that is so big is seems like an ocean, but the approach is through deciduous forest that is decidedly NOT like any places near oceans that I've experienced in the East. It was the best weather we've had here in Michigan so far - up around 60 degrees, but VERY windy by the lake, hence my cockatiel-like hairdo.

Lake Michigan is an old friend and from my childhood I've toured both sides of it. I'm a bit more familiar with the Wisconsin side since my adulthood. It's interesting to see the view of someone who's not seen it before.

Since you've enjoyed the shore and Saugatuck, some time do a tour all around her. The Straits and Island of Mackinac and the Wisconsin side are wonderful, as is the Wisonsin penninsula of Door County.

Your Saugatuk meal sounds really great!

It was weird for me, too, going through the forest... to get to the beach!

I had any number of those "not in Kansas" moments when we went backpacking in Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area. We got our water directly from the lake ("This just feels wrong. It looks like the ocean!"). And although it was probably too chilly for wading when you were there, b/c it's fresh water, there's no clingy-crusty salt feeling after wading or swimming...

Not the beach of my childhood. :)

We're "collecting" all five Great Lakes, but none of the others has spoken to me the way Lake Michigan has. It has its own place in my heart, and probably will for the rest of my life.
