Fretting















Before the frets are put in, they have to be prepped... cut to length for each fret slot (which are different lengths b/c the fretboard is tapered). Then, because the fretboard is bound, it is necessary to cut the tang (the barbed downward pointing part of the fret wire) with the fret tang nipper (above) so that only the bead (the rounded top of the fret wire) is left on the ends. That extends to the outside edge of the fretboard binding. The fret wire is glued and hammered down into the fret slots.
After that, the excess glue is scraped off of the fretboard, and the ends of frets are nipped off and filed flush to the side of the fretboard, then beveled (so that the ends taper down), and de-burred. It's a detailed process, but critically important to the playability of the instrument.
